My name is Laura and I was born in 1988. When I was 18 months old, I was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, and my left eye had to be removed. I cannot remember the time before the diagnosis, so I basically grew up with only one eye. However, that never stopped me or held me back from doing the things that I wanted to. There are almost none sports that I haven’t tried out. Bambini soccer was shortly followed by ballet, basketball and volleyball as well as rowing and aerobics – I’ve thoroughly enjoyed myself trying these sports out. Further, seeing with one eye didn‘t cause any other obstacles for me and I believe I meet the same challenges as most other people do. Personally, my biggest challenge was studying chemistry, but I have now successfully managed that too. The next challenge awaits for sure ;-).
Of course, in puberty there were little doubts concerning my eye. For me, it was very helpful to talk to another girl affected, which makes me understand how important the contact to and exchange beyond people concerned can be.
